Abstract

Teaching benches are an important aid for better professional training conditions, as they provide students with emulated, controlled, and relatively safe contact with tangible everyday realities. The air compressor has become a machine commonly found in industry and services, by facilitating processes in which human strength alone would be unfeasible. As it plays a fundamental role and is an energy consumer, organizations look for ways to make their operations more efficient, seeking to increase the energy efficiency of equipment. However, unlike other engineering disciplines, teaching energy efficiency in air compressors may be restricted to expository classes and technical visits, not providing experimentation or immersion for the student, thus acting as a spectator. This work develops a bench prototype with a set of maneuvering and energy-measuring equipment so that it can be used as a teaching resource in practical classes on energy efficiency in air compressors, with on-off activation and rotation variation driven by a frequency inverter. As a result, it appears that variations in electrical energy consumption depending on the type of drive are significant, which led to the development of several didactic tasks with the collection and analysis of operational data by the student.
