Abstract

This work presents a computational analysis of different modeling approaches for the ground effect in transmission lines on the calculation of lightning and switching overvoltages. A comparative study is performed between the transient responses obtained using different models under lightning strikes and line switching, considering an operating voltage of 500 kV. To assess the impact of the models, soils with resistivities of 100 and 10,000 $\Omega$.m are considered. The results demonstrated significant sensitivity to soil characteristics in simulations of atmospheric overvoltages and negligible impact on simulations of switching overvoltages.
